The times they are changin'
We're experiencing a paradigm shift in the investment landscape. There has been an influx of new investors in the stock market during the Covid-19 pandemic. A recent survey* found that 38% of respondents who had never had an investment account before opened a non-retirement investment account in 2020 to invest in the public stock markets.
These newer investors were typically younger (under age 45), more diverse and with smaller holdings than existing investors, the researchers found. The top product for new investors was individual stocks, which were owned by 64% of respondents, followed by mutual funds (28%) and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) (25%). Technology is changing most, if not all, industries now. The capital markets and investments are no different. The democratization of finance is happening.
The next big thing: Investing in private companies
With the insurgence of retail investors in the public stock markets, it is only a matter of time before these investors shift their attention to the private capital markets.
We have already experienced a surge of investment activity on our platform. In the first half of our financial year, the period October 2020 - March 2021 we already processed 3,525 investments, exceeding the total number of investments from our last financial year by 70%. We have added 1,980 new investors in the first six months of the year, 60% more than for the whole of the previous financial year. And, investors on FrontFundr are becoming more and more engaged, creating investment portfolios of private investments. Investors that have made more than one investment on FrontFundr has increased from 13% to 20% in the first half of our current financial year.
