Overview

Our objective at The Very Good Butchers is to produce organic, wholesome, real food without tricks or gimmicks.  We want to make healthy planet-friendly meat alternatives that are accessible to omnivores, vegetarians and vegans.  We are an inclusive company that wants to provide wholesome food for everyone to enjoy.

We are currently unable to produce enough product to meet demand. We are looking for capital to help scale up our business and increase our production capacity.

We are a plant-based butcher shop which means we butcher beans, veggies, herbs and spices to create a variety of delicious, organic, plant-based meat. You can come into our shop and get your plant-based meats and cheeses pre-packaged, or chopped up and served by weight.

We also offer a hot food breakfast/lunch/dinner service including a range of vegan comfort food like burgers, deli sandwiches, poutine, mac' n cheeze, breakfast bennies and more!

We got our start at the Denman Island Farmer's Market. From there, we expanded to Victoria opening the first vegan butcher shop on the west coast of Canada. We had over 1000 people show up for opening day and had to shut down for a week afterwards just to restock everything. Since then we've been struggling to keep up with demand for our products. We launched a Kickstarter last summer to help us expand and raised $64,000 from 700 different backers. We used that money to expand into a bigger space where we significantly increased production as well as our product lineup.

  • Opened the first vegan butcher shop on the west coast of Canada in February of 2017.
  • Regularly sell out at markets, events, and pop-ups across B.C.
  • Won an Eco-Star award for environmental sustainability.
  • Ran a successful Kickstarter campaign raising $64,000 from 700 different backers.
  • Expanded into a bigger space where we increased our product line and hot food offering.
  • Waiting list of 100+ different restaurants and stores that want to carry our products as well as significant franchise interest.
  • Launched the "Monthly Meat Club" a subscription box product that we ship across North America.
  • Filmed for CBC Dragon's Den.
  • Over a million dollars in revenue in just over a year of operation with healthy margins on our entire product line.
  • Coming soon to FrontFundr!

We have a vegan Butcher shop in Victoria as well as our Monthly Meat Club which we ship across North America and we can't keep up with the demand for our product.

Since opening, we've been working hard to create a brand and line of products that people love. We've tried to grow as quickly, and sustainably as possible. Here are a few financial highlights:

  • $850,000 in first year revenue while being production limited
  • 40% organic growth projected for year two
  • 100k monthly revenue for July and August
  • 32% COGS on core product line
  • $7.76 profit per package of burgers sold (when sold direct)
  • 43% margin via traditional distribution channels (wholesale)

We've prepared some additional documentation including 2017 year end financials, a pro-forma balance sheet and income statement, and a cash flow projection. You can find them in the "documents" section..

    We're offering a convertible note on a 3 year term with 6% interest, a 15% discount and a 7.5M cap.
We've put together a blog post with an overview and some more information about this opportunity here.

There is also a term section at the bottom of this page with further information. You can access the term sheet and other due diligence materials in the documents section.

Please feel free to reach out directly if you have any questions or would like to discuss further.

Production Facility

Since day one we've been unable to keep up with demand for our product. We've done our best to scale up with the resources available to us, purchasing larger equipment and moving into a larger space. We've also started a co-packing initiative and done extensive research into larger scale production techniques and best practices.

The next step for us is to build our own dedicated production facility. This is going to be a place where we can make larger batches of our delicious plant based meats without sacrificing quality, texture, or flavour.

From here, we can produce meats for our butcher shop in Victoria (and Vancouver soon) as well as our online orders, wholesale customers, and eventually franchisees.

We've already started building out a detailed plan for this facility and are aiming for a production increase of 10X (increasing to 20X in the first 6 months of the facility being open).

From there, we can continue scaling up with larger equipment and innovations in production techniques.

Below is a video from a FrontFundr webinar we did where we discuss our current situation and plans for future growth.

Vancouver Shop
We've had a huge amount of demand for our products in Vancouver and regularly sell out at markets, pop-ups and events.  We want to build a second vegan butcher shop/restaurant there. It will be a similar concept to our Victoria location but larger. We've already started scoping out locations and drawing up plans.

After our Vancouver location is established and we've increased our production capacity we'll continue expanding across North America!

We have big plans for the future but we can't do it without your help!
Please consider investing in us through this FrontFundr campaign and sharing this campaign with your family, friends, and colleagues.

We want to change the world one very good burger at a time.

Initial Goal Reached!

Wow, that was fast!
We've already hit our initial goal of $100,000.
A huge thank you to everyone who has invested so far!

A few quick notes for non accredited investors.
We are using two crowd-funding exemptions in this campaign.
Each exemption is for $250,000 and the maximum you can invest per exemption is $5,000 (BC, Alta and SK investors only, if deemed suitable).

That means if you'd like to invest more than $5,000 you'll need to invest the first $5,000 soon and the second $5,000 after we close this exemption and open the second one (likely within a week or so). Please let me know if this makes sense or if you have any questions. If you're unsure how the convertible note works I've put together an overview with a few examples here. We'll be posting an update once we've moved onto the second exemption. These investments are also RRSP/TFSA eligible (there's just a little bit more paperwork).

The maximum raise for this campaign is $1,000,000 ($500,000 from crowdfunding exemption and $500,000 from accredited investors and friends and family)

In other news, we were featured on CTV this morning. Erin Ireland was promoting the upcoming Veg Fest which we will be participating in this weekend in Vancouver. You can check out the video clip here:

If you're going to be in Vancouver on Sunday please feel free to come say hi! All of the information is on the Facebook event page here: https://www.facebook.com/events/2054454451286448/

That's all for now, thanks once again!

cheers,

We're Live on FrontFundr!!

We're excited to announce that our FrontFundr campaign is now live!!

Thanks for your patience as we put everything in place for this campaign.
We had to do some re-organizing of our share structure to prepare for this crowdfunding equity round and it took a little bit longer than expected. We also had some interest from some large investors and had to go through a due diligence process with them.

We recently did a webinar with FrontFundr. You can check out the recording below for more info on what we're hoping to accomplish.
Our full campaign page has been published with an updated video and page.
There's a bunch of additional info (business plan, cash flow projections, pitch deck etc.) for anyone who would like to review them in the documents section.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out directly by emailing mitchell@verygoodbutchers.com

cheers,

General Risks
By accessing this site you agree to be bound by FrontFundr’s Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy. FrontFundr distributes exempt market securities to qualified individuals as defined by National Instrument 45-106, Prospectus and Registration Exemptions and crowdfunding exemptions including Multilateral Instrument 45-108 Crowdfunding and Multilateral CSA Notice 45-316 Start-up Crowdfunding Registration and Prospectus Exemptions.
As an exempt market dealer, Silver Maple can trade and underwrite exempt market securities. Exempt market securities are risky investments and you could lose all the money you invest in such securities.
In general, investment products sold in the exempt market are considered high risk because:
  1. They are not covered by deposit or investor protection insurance;
  2. Regulators do not review offering memoranda for completeness;
  3. Private issuers are not subject to the same ongoing disclosure obligations as reporting issuers;
  4. Private issuers may inadvertently, or advertently, refrain from providing an investor or a registered dealer, all the information required to make an informed investment decision.
  5. Many exempt products are not as liquid as publicly-traded securities and you may be restricted in your ability to sell or transfer these securities; and
  6. Exempt products are often subject to a greater degree of “key person” risk than more widely held securities.
  7. There can be no assurances that an investment will maintain its net acquisition value or produce any projected income or capital return. Investment values change frequently and past performances may not be repeated.
  8. Using borrowed money to finance the purchase of securities involves greater risk than a purchase using cash resources. If you borrow money to purchase securities, your responsibility to repay the loan and pay interest as required by its terms remains the same even if the value of the securities purchased declines. See “use of borrowed funds”.
The risks highlighted above are not conclusive. Risk disclosures specific for each offering are reviewed by SMV and are presented within an issuer’s profile page on the platform and within the offering memorandum or other offering documents for the issuance. Offering documents and the risks associated with the securities of an issuer contained therein should be reviewed thoroughly by an investor or an investor’s professional advisors before making an investment.
This web site is for general information only and is not intended to provide personalized advice, including investment, financial, legal, accounting or tax advice. FrontFundr will assess your suitability to invest in the products offered on its platform.
